Ahead By A Neck

Every once in a while, something appears on our fashion radar and becomes an overnight cult classic. More often than not, they are pieces with a heritage – classics, maybe, with a slightly frumpy rep – that have been hijacked by the cool crew and given a new lease of life. For autumn/winter 2011, it’s the Peter Pan collar.  From runway (check out Giambattista Valii, DKNY and Louis Vuitton for inspiration) to red carpet (watch Carey, Michelle and Natalie rock it), the Peter Pan collar is popping up everywhere and on everyone. It may look sweet and innocent but don’t let that fool you – this sartorial statement works a sexy confidence all of its own. Frankly, it had us at hello.

The appeal of the modern Peter Pan collar is that it’s got the high/low mix of boyish and girly down pat.  As much as we hate to jump on the Alexa bandwagon –  she does score a full fash house here for her signature (and seriously on trend) look.  Think clean lines and a pared down aesthetic, all sweetly subverted by a flash of frothy femininity in the form of a neat Peter Pan collar.

Come the autumn, the coolest collars come in crisp contrasting cotton, soft buttery leathers or embellished with beads and jewels.  Take your cue from effortlessly cool French labels like Sandro, Maje and newly arrived The Kooples who all offer their own quirky take on this minimal detailing.

Under Pressure

I went shopping yesterday with the intention of returning some pleat front trousers ( with my thighs I have no idea why I thought narrow trousers with waist pleats were ever an option for me!).

I nipped into Zara and found this fab jacket, so far so good…….

Then I became overwhelmed with self doubt as to whether I really liked the jacket or was it because it reminded me of a jacket I had seen Diane Kruger wearing.

The doubts went as foll0ws….

“but Diane Kruger is a “good” celeb unlike say Cheryl Cole”

“I should have a stronger sense of taste, celebs shouldn’t affect me I am not a teenager”

“It is a nice jacket, I always like blue”

“What if I wear it with shorts and people think I am trying to be Diane Kruger and am obviously not succeeding as I do not have Gieselle like legs a la Diane”

“If I can convince myself I was influenced by the catwalk version of this outfit ( as worn by a model not a celebrity) is that better or is that just ripping off talented designers by buying the cheapo version of their designs?”

In the end I purchased the jacket as I knew it would make me happy and go with alot of items in my wardrobe…. sometimes shopping can be that simple.

Hedi Slimane

Frances Bean Cobain

Frances Bean Cobain

I don’t know a whole lot about Hedi Slimane apart from the fact that he is a design genius and the reason Karl Lagerfeld lost 42 kg (roughly 92.6 pounds) in 13 months in 2001, his explanation was “…I suddenly wanted to dress differently, to wear clothes designed by Hedi Slimane,” he said. I am still waiting for similar diet inspiration to hit me.

Hedi Slimane’s latest images (he is also a photographer… the man’s talents know no bounds) are of Frances Bean Cobain. Seems she has spent the last few years getting tattoos and practising pouty looks. The shots are dark moody and definitely portray her rock n roll heritage.

These are merely the latest shots on Slimane’s amazing photo diary.

The diary shots are all black and white and vary from beautiful rock n roll images to great shots of surfers and skaters.

New season, new shapes, new shooooes!

If, like me you are always intending to get your shoes re-heeled but never quite get around to it the new shoe shapes are going to fill your heart with glee!

I keep telling myself that one day in the near future I look polished and wear pulled together outfits.  More often than not some element of my outfit is definitely less than perfect, most common being holes in tights or in the underarms of jumpers. Not content with there being visible evidence of my scruffy nature I often have audible evidence too, the scratchy sound of shoes needing to be re-heeled on hard floors. This sound more than any other mortifies me! The chunkier shoes shapes for Autumn Winter are going to give me a “get out of jail free card”. Even with my marching around town I won’t wear these down in a hurry!

Added bonus, the slightly chunkier shape will make the feet and ankles look dainty. I am going to pair them them with skinny tailored trousers in strong colours to try to gain new season kudos.

Some of my favourites are below:

 1. DVF Cumin Suede Rhiannon Block heeled shoe  €290 my-wardrobe.com

2. Christian Louboutin Morphing 100 calf hair pumps, €695 net-a-porter.com
